Amsterdam remains a global crossroads and a vibrant hub of art, music and culture, with an endless cavalcade of exhibitions, concerts, plays and festivals. Beyond such art monoliths as the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum, there are a myriad of less-visited spaces with whimsical themes. The festival lineup is equally diverse, featuring everything from stage theatre to minimal music to tattoos, and in late summer the famous canals become the stage for a series of chamber music concerts. Revelry is at its peak on King's Day, a birthday party for the king. This is when the capital is decked out in patriotic orange, the canals are filled with party boats, and the city is transformed into one giant flea market as everyone empties their lockers onto the sidewalk and sheds their mess.
